Spanish giants Real Madrid will take on Italian Europa League winners Atalanta in Warsaw on Wednesday night, with the winners earning the right to lift the UEFA Super Cup trophy
Real Madrid will have a famous face among their ranks when they walk out to play in this UEFA Super Cup final. Kylian Mbappé says he's always dreamed of playing for the club, and unlike when a player says the same about Crystal Palace or MK Dons, that's easy to believe. With an embarrassment of attacking talent now in the squad, this game should be an insight into how Carlo Ancelotti intends to deploy all of his stars.
Atalanta were the only team to beat Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen last season – a victory that won them the Europa League trophy. Gian Piero Gasperini has managed to keep most of his triumphant squad together, adding a few bodies to cope with the extra demands of playing in this season's Champions League, but one man who won't be involved in the Super Cup final is midfielder Teun Koopmeiners, who has agreed to join Juventus.
Atalanta are heading into this fixture on the back of a series of winless outings in pre-season but the Europa League winners will be hoping to pull off a shock result against the strong favourites from Spain.
Real Madrid will be confident of clinching their sixth trophy to become the team with the most Super Cup titles to their name.
Real Madrid team news
Defender David Alaba is still sidelined due to his prolonged ACL recovery but Real Madrid’s squad is otherwise in good shape.
The lineup is expected to feature new signing Kylian Mbappe, who has fully reintegrated with the squad after his post-Euro 2024 break.
Real Madrid possible XI: Courtois; Carvajal, Rudiger, Militao, Mendy; Valverde, Tchouameni, Bellingham; Rodrygo, Mbappe, Vinicius Junior
Atalanta team news
Atalanta have bolstered their attack with marquee signings, including Charles De Ketelaere and Mateo Retegui, along with additions like Ben Godfrey, Nicolo Zaniolo, and Ibrahim Sulemana.
Gianluca Scamacca faces months on the sidelines due to an ACL injury, while Giorgio Scalvini is also beginning the long recovery process from a similar issue.
Dutch international Teun Koopmeiners, who is reportedly on the verge of a move out of the club, will not play any part in this fixture.
Atalanta predicted XI: Musso; Djimsiti, Hien, Kolasinac; Zappacosta, Pasalic, Ederson, Ruggeri; Lookman, De Ketelaere; Retegui
Real Madrid will be without the services of the now retired Toni Kroos and Nacho Fernandez, who has moved to the Saudi Pro League to play for Al-Qadsian. Carlo Ancelotti’s team will also be without David Alaba, who is still recovering from an ACL injury.
What the Spanish giants will have however, is Kylian Mbappe. The France captain made a summer signing to Madrid following a seven-season stint at Paris Saint-Germain.
Atalanta has been busy over the transfer window with coach Gian Piero Gasperini making several signings to replace the players who left the club after last season. The team however, continues to boast the services of striker Ademola Lookman, who scored a hat-trick in the Europa League final.
The Champions League winners meet the side who conquered the previously unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final, with the two clashing in the Polish city of Warsaw.
Kylian Mbappe is in line to make his long-awaited Madrid debut after finally arriving from a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, though the Serie A outfit have proven they are not to be overlooked even if the LaLiga giants boast a stunning record in European finals.
This one is likely to attract more attention than most, however, with Mbappé, who finally made the move from PSG to the Bernabeu in the summer after years of speculation, set to pull on that famous white and gold shirt for the first time in a competitive game.
Looking to spoil the party will be Atalanta, who have previous for upsetting the script after beating Bayer Leverkusen to kill their dreams of finishing the season unbeaten and winning a European trophy for the first time in nearly 40 years.
